One thing that has changed since I published the first version of The Local Economy Revolution: What’s Changed and How You Can Help is that people now make trailers for books. Kind of like a movie trailer, but without car crashes and explosions (maybe I’m reading the wrong books).

Making the trailer for The Local Economy Revolution Has Arrived was actually kind of cool, though, because it gave me a chance to focus in on the core idea of the book — the disconnect…

After more than five years of learning and doing and failing and learning and doing again, the revised, updated and expanded version of my 2013 book, The Local Economy Revolution: What’s Changed and How You Can Help will be released in print, PDF and digital formats on February 10!

It’s hard enough to write a book, but it turns out that it’s even harder to redo a book that you’ve already put so much work into, and that’s become so much a part of your own…

We’re all looking at the coming year with some mix of hope and trepidation: an end in sight now to some of the biggest crises we’ve faced, but also a new, sobering awareness of Big Things we need to work on. I’ve been sketching the issues and the new opportunities I think we have to impact them, and I’d love to hear what you think.

Here’s one that I’ve been chewing on a lot:

We learned this year on a whole new level that we don’t know how to get along with people who are not like us. Whether it’s…

The first part of this essay is a segment of one I published last week, called “
Reflections and gratitude for Tony Hsieh, vision, and persistence.” Given the accounts of his last year that have come out since I published that, I wrote a coda, as it were, that tried to put those earlier statements in the context of what appears to be a more tragic story. In the process, I also reconnected with a crucial part of what makes the Downtown Project — and most of the successful community revitalization efforts I’ve seen actually effective. …

I never met Tony Hseih. That was on purpose.

The Downtown Project in Las Vegas crossed my conscience at a moment when I had become frustrated, embittered by the failures of my professions. As an urban planner and economic developer with a long history in downtown and community revitalization, I had hit a dead end, concluding that the tools I had learned and used to make communities better, healthier, more resilient, had failed. My professional belief system, as it were, was falling apart. And I had nothing to replace it.

Hi, all. As I noted yesterday, I will temporarily shift this blog from my usual Deeeep Thoughts to a more practical sharing of simple updates and what I’m calling Good Ideas — practical measures that you, your business, your business community and your organizations can do right now to help address the crisis, particularly the local and small business impacts of the current pandemic. As I noted before, this is a supplement to the Facebook Live update I am doing every weekday at 2PM Eastern / 11:00 Pacific. You don’t have to be a Facebook user to view that, you…

I’m going to temporarily put the longer-term Wise Economy-type ruminations on hold to share more immediate information. As some of you know, I am now managing communications for the American Independent Business Alliance (AMIBA), which is stepping quickly into a lead role in the movement to strengthen local economies by building strong independent businesses and communities. This movement embodies a lot of the issues of local economy resilience, inclusive entrepreneurship, community innovation and more — issues that form the centerpiece of The Local Economy Revolution and the update that I am continuing to work on. …
